Elected to Craft Membership in 1955.

Born in London where he trained as an art student and entered the Royal College of Art. He studied calligraphy, book-binding and allied crafts under Dorothy Mahoney, herself a pupil of Edward Johnston. He gained his ARCA Diploma in 1946 and has since divided his time between part-time teaching and as a consultant in handwriting and calligraphy to the pen industry. He has published a number of books on the teaching of handwriting and calligraphy (names not recorded). (details from S. Gunn)

Studied under: Dorothy Mahoney.

Pamela Barnett (nee Wrightson) (1928-1971)

Elected to Craft Membership in 1954.

Pamela Barnett (nee Wrightson) received her lettering training under the late M. C. Oliver at the Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute, and from him she acquired her sound understanding of Johnston's teaching, which was to be the springboard of her own personal style. Her lettering has the Johnstonian hallmarks of simplicity and clarity, allied to a strong colour sense, qualities that she developed through her work as Heal's scribe. She worked full-time at Heal's, from November 1947 to March 1966, initially carrying out all their lettering herself and later with assistants. Though she is known primarily by the posters she did for Heal's, she carried out a great variety of other work including, on the unusual hexagonal coffee tables presented to Viggo Volin (a Danish business associate of Heal's), the lettering set in the Formica tops. Her work for other patrons included decorative maps, commemorative and presentation pieces, poems, prayers and certificates. She first exhibited with the Society at the Crafts Centre in 1956, and for many years she carried out the Society's Exhibition posters. She also did the poster for and contributed work to Two Thousand Years of Calligraphy - the exhibition in Baltimore, USA, in 1965. There are examples of her work in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection, and in the SSI Travelling Exhibition, as well as in many other places including Sandringham and the Royal Mews. Reproductions of her work appear in Calligraphy Today, Lettering Today and in the Baltimore Exhibition catalogue.Pamela was elected a Craft Member of the Society in 1954, and always took a keen interest in its affairs. She served on the Committee during 1964/65 and from 1968 to her death. For 2 years she acted as Membership Secretary (from an obituary by Anne Blessley, presumed 1971).

Studied under: M. C. Oliver.

Stuart Barrie (1925-)

Elected to Craft Membership in 1956.

Studied under Nora Paterson, successor to Irene Wellington at the Edinburgh College of Art. Lecturer, later Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at the Department of Visual Communications, Edinburgh College of Art. (M.S.I.A.D, 1968). He taught part-time from 1955 to 1960, and full-time from 1960 to 1990. He sees his teaching as having been a major contribution. He has had "some" effect on calligraphy in Scotland by completing commissioned works and exhibiting regularly in exhibitions such as the Society of Scottish Artists (1958-88).

Studied under: Nora Paterson D.A., R.S.W..

Margaret Bartels

Elected to Craft Membership in 1921.

Irene Base

Elected to Craft Membership in 1922.

Born and educated in Norfolk, she studied calligraphy as part of an illustration course at Chelsea School of Art under Mervyn C. Oliver. Through her research and experiments, she became the world's leading authority on gilding, and contributed the chapter on gilding in The Calligrapher's Handbook. Her strongest interest lay in the production of manuscript books. She worked on the RAF Memorial Books but considered her finest work was for St Mary's in Shirehampton, Bristol (an area to which she moved in 1945). Books on display in St Mary's church, Shirehampton, Bristol, include the beautiful Altar Book and the magnificent Memorial Book. She was elected a Craft Member of the SSI in its first year, and in 1959 she formed the Bristol Manuscript Club. (obituary Scribe no. 25. Gordon Niblett)

Derek W S Benney ARCA (1924-2010)

Elected to Craft Membership in 1953.

Served as Chairman: 1985-1988

Derek Ward Sallis Benney was born on 31 May 1924 into an artistic family. Derek's father was Ernest Alfred Sallis Benney who became head of Hull Art School at the surprisingly youthful age of 18, and later Principal of Brighton School of Art. He entered the RCA in 1947 and studied under Dorothy Mahoney and Irene Wellington, with Sheila Waters and John Woodcock. He was elected to Craft Membership of the SSI in 1953, and served as Chairman from 1985 to 1988. Among his more significant early commissioned works was a volume of the RAF Book of Remembrance, St Clement Danes Church, London. Derek specialised in Honorary Freedom scrolls. There is readily accessible memorial work by him in Sainsbury's, Streatham Common, London (for the Caterpillar Club, an association for wartime personnel rescued from the sea in inflatable dinghies) and at the museum of the Royal Surrey Regiment in Clandon Park, Guildford. In 1961 he moved to Prestatyn as head of the Flintshire School of Art, and later to Suffolk where for 18 years he was the Prinicipal of Ipswich School of Art. His calligraphy was perhaps overlooked in the light of his superb draughtshmanship, and for 40 years he exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer exhibition. He died on 5 February 2010. (Further details are published in The Scribe, volume 90, in an obituary written by Richard Middleton).

At 18 he took calligraphy as part of his Leaving Certificate and then went to Art School in Dublin. He joined the Roehampton Institute to study under Ann Camp in 1987. The following year he became the youngest ever Fellow of the SSI, aged 20. (details S. Gunn). He continued as a full-time calligrapher working in Dublin and an early commission was 'The Great Book of Ireland', combining the work of Ireland's greatest poets and artists and held together by his calligraphy. Now he works predominantly using calligraphy in a fine art context and sells via international galleries and also directly from his studio and website. Recent accolades have included being Keynote Speaker at the 2007 International Calligraphy Conference on Vancouver Island, Canada; winning the Irish Crafts Councils annual Bursary 2006 which has financed the production of a portfolio of large scale work targeted at architects; and a unique live performance at the 2008 international Calligraphy Conference in Chicago, where Denis worked live on a total 68 feet long of panels and also projected video and music of his own filming & composition for a multilayered and multimedia dynamic. His work appears in many books and international guild journals.

Has taught for guilds including (for example), Alpha Club & Calligraphy NetWork & CLA all in Japan; ABC Hong Kong; Schreibwerkstatt Klingspor & Ars Scribendi in Germany; ASC and many other Australian guilds; Scriptores Belgium; CLAS UK; FOC San Francisco; SFC Los Angeles; Washington (DC) Calligrapher's Guild; Portland Society for Calligraphy; & many other US calligraphy organizations. Ruth Bruckner (1945-2017)

Elected to Fellowship in 2005.

Major works The Gods Under The Floor by Jo Shapcott - panel on calfskin vellum The Song of Solomon and commentary by Mehri Nicknam. Written as a manuscript book with limp vellum binding. These were 2 pieces of work submitted for the Fellowship. Ruth wrote in both English and Hebrew calligraphy. Obituary by Sylvie Gokulsing FSSI, with contributions from Hazel Beney and Sue Hufton FSSI. Ruth trained at Digby Stuart (Roehampton) in the early 1980s under Ann Camp. I first met her in 1990, when I joined her class in Hebrew calligraphy. A year later I joined her Adult Education Class in Western lettering and remained with her until I went to Roehampton in 1993. As a teacher, and also as a calligrapher, Ruth was always careful, considered and thoughtful, always ready to listen, discuss and consider the subtleties of calligraphy. Her own work was about the essential understanding of calligraphy and how skills and techniques could be shown to their best advantage. She often used precisely made cut paper and simple printed shapes that she took a huge amount of time over. The precise placement of each and every element was crucial. She was always generous with her time and I spent several days with her at her home where she showed me various techniques which were not possible to cover in a weekly adult education class. A craftswoman par excellence, she used quills for writing and enjoyed working on vellum. Nothing was ever dashed off quickly or with little thought. For Ruth the technical challenge and mastery was very much part of her enjoyment of calligraphy and also what gave her a sense of fulfilment. She even learnt how to frame her own work so that the framed pieces she submitted for Fellowship in 2005 bore frames made by her. She was an active member of North London Lettering Arts (NLLA) since its inception, helping in many ways, People there will miss her friendship and expert help with small exhibitions. Since Ruth’s health hadn't been good she had been enjoying a painting class. She explored abstract styles and found inspiration from photographs taken on various travels. Over a year ago, she and her husband moved from a house to a smaller flat and she generously passed on many of her tools and materials to me knowing that she would no longer be using them.

Studied under: Studied calligraphy at The Hamstead Garden Suburb Institute with Ewan Clayton, Gaynor Goffe, Tom Perkins 1981-3. , The Roehampton Institute with Ann Camp, Gaynor Goffe, Tom Perkins 1983-6..
