Christopher Calderhead

Elected to Fellowship in 1988.

Studied under: Ann Camp.

Ann Camp (1924-2019)

Year of Election to Fellowship unknown.

Studied lettering with M. C. Oliver who had been a student of Edward Johnston, at Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute, and later with Dorothy Mahoney (another of EJ's students) at the Royal College of Art. She became a Fellow of the SSI in 1946 and is internationally known as one of the foremost teachers of calligraphy in Britain. She played a major part in setting up the calligraphy and bookbinding courses at Roehampton and taught part-time there until poor health caused her retirement. Many of her students have themselves gone on to become Fellows of the SSI. She is the author of the classic Pen Lettering first published in 1958. Samples of her work appear in Calligraphy Today ed. Heather Child, and in The Art of The Scribe (SSI exhibition catalogue). (details S. Gunn) Ann Camp FSSI 11 April, 2019 by Chris Baker We are very sad to announce that Ann Camp, one of our most respected Fellows, quietly passed away on the 8th April 2019 at age 94. Ann was elected to Fellowship in 1946 and was considered to be one of the foremost teachers of calligraphy in Britain. So many of those who studied under her have themselves gone on to become Fellows of the SSI. One of her notable achievements that many of us are familiar with, is her classic book Pen Lettering. A full obituary of her life and work will be published later this year.

She became an Associate and then a Fellow of the SSI in 1990, having been an Assistant to Donald Jackson.
She helped to set up the Roehampton Correspondence Course and worked as a tutor and freelance calligrapher. Her work appears in The Calligraphers Project Book by Suzanne Haines, Modern Scribes and Lettering Artists II, Calligraphy Today ed. Heather Child and the SSI exhibition catalogues of Calligraphy '84 and Fine Words, Fine Books. (details S. Gunn)
