Ida Henstock
Elected to Craft Membership in 1925.
She began her work as the assistant to Graily Hewitt in 1923 when Madelyn Walker, who had been her calligraphy tutor at the Sheffield School of Art, invited her to join the Petersfield workshop where so many major works were to be produced. There were many books and Rolls of Honour and numerous Royal Patents for the Crown Office which she continued to do for over 40 years. For this work she was appointed a Member of Royal Victorian Order, an honour shared by her friend Dorothy Hutton. The quality of her illumination and gold will long be admired, with its delicacy of line and yet vigorous drawing and decoration so much part of the letter. Visitors to Portsmouth Cathedral admire her work as they look at the Service Books presented and written by Graily Hewitt. After his death in 1952, Ida was able to work in her own right, and her work is to be found in major collections, cathedrals and churches. One particularly large work is the House of Lords Roll of Honour, 1939-45 with its 408 full page coats of arms. It is to be regretted that her work has never been reproduced in colour. David Howells (1918-2012)
Year of Election to Fellowship unknown.
David was an artist as much as he was a calligrapher. As such, his training was broadly based and teachers included Ronald and Mrs Horton, Ann Gasston, Marguerite Johnson M.A., E. Morgan-Rendle, F C Herrick and Leslie Cole (with whom he studied lithography). Leicester College of Art subsequently became Leicester Polytechnic then De Montfort University. Here David taught BA Hons and MA Hons students as a Senior Lecturer from 1952 to 1984, when he was made to retire. He also taught at Brighton College of Art and Design, and was Visiting Lecturer to the Royal College of Art teaching calligraphy from 1976 to 1980. His students went into many fields: Tony Matthews became an illustrator, Cal Swann a book designer, Linda Grey a designer and Charles Dance an actor. He has made many teaching visits to the USA, Japan and Netherlands. He specialised in linking writing with drawing and watercolours. He has produced calligraphic works for Leicester City Council, the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, and (working as part of the team under Alfred Fairbank) the Memorial Book to the United States Air Force of WW2: this is in St Clement Dane's church in London. His work has been reproduced in books by other calligraphers: Calligraphy by David Harris: Lettering Techniques by John Lancaster: Calligraphy Today: Modern Scribes and Lettering Artists: Kalligrafie Alden Biesen 1988: Cultureel Strombeek 1990. He exhibited at the SSI exhibitions Art of the Scribe and Calligraphy 84. In 1997, he designed the sculpture "Tribute to RAF Halton, Apprenticeship Scheme which stands outside the "schools" at RAF Halton, near Wendover, Bucks. He died on 4th September 2012, still an active calligrapher.

She was Editor of The Scribe for twelve years, managed the SSI Library, served several times on the Executive Committee and exhibited widely.
