Edward Johnston (1872-1944)

Honorary Member. Edward Johnston was born in Uruguay in 1872. At the age of seventeen he evinced an interest in illuminating. Later, when his health broke down, he abandoned a medical career and, guided by WR Lethaby, Sydney Cockerell and Robert Bridges, he devoted himself to the study and practice of calligraphy until his death at Ditchling, Sussex, in 1944. From 1899 to 1912 he taught at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts and from 1901 also at the Royal College of Art. His many pupils were inspired to perpetuate his influence, both in their work and in their own teaching. In 1906 he published his great manual, still the vade mecum for calligraphers, Writing & Illuminating, & Lettering, and in 1909 he wrote Manuscript and Inscription Letters. He also designed type faces and all London admired his fine block letters for the Underground Railway. He rediscovered the principles on which formal writing had been developed, the tools and materials and the correct preparation of them, and brought to the practice of a single craft as much genius as any craftsman who ever lived. Sir Sydney Cockerell wrote that 'his development as a scribe followed rather closely that of professional handwriting from the eleventh to the fifteenth century. Starting with an open rounded hand inspired by the early Winchester School, his calligraphy tended to become more and more gothic and compressed. There are some who lament this . . . But no original artist can stand still and go on repeating himself . . '
Although he spent much time teachng, his own work was eagerly sought, and many fine examples are extant. His influence on writing and illumination cannot be measured. Two good works about him have been published: Tributes to Edward Johnston,Calligrapher (Society of Scribes and Illuminators, 1948), and Edward Johnston, by Priscilla Johnston (1959). He was the first honorary member of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators, and he was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 1939.
