Mervyn C Oliver (1886-1958)
Elected to Craft Membership in 1921.
Mervyn Oliver was born in 1886 and died in 1958. He was a student of Edward Johnston at the Royal College of Art and became one of the greatest British teachers of the twentieth century. He taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, Chelsea School of Art, St. Martin's School of Art and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute. He was the author of the chapters on the design of manuscript books and inscriptions, and the development of illumination in The Calligrapher's Handbook (1956). His numerous commissions include war memorial and record books. He was awarded the M.B.E. in I956.
