We are delighted to announce that the Study Days for 2023 will be led by Juliet Bankes FSSI and the source of inspiration will be the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.
The SSI Study Days provide a unique opportunity to find inspiration for work and to develop your ideas through to a finished piece.
The course comprises two days:
Day 1 – A museum visit with time to make notes, sketch, photograph, talk and discuss ideas under the guidance of a Fellow.
Day 2 – A practical workshop where you can progress your ideas through group discussion and again, with expert guidance from an experienced tutor.
After the two days, there will be opportunities for Zoom meetings with the tutor. Juliet is also happy to be contacted via email between the two days about the progress of work.
This course is not suitable for beginners but is ideal for anyone with good writing skills and particularly for those who struggle to find source material or inspiration for work.
As this is not a residential course, you will need to arrange your own accommodation if required.

The real thing, an untouched Victorian museum where the way the objects were presented was as important as what was being presented. And it had a history and a subtext and all sort of connotations attached to it. It was an amazing treasure house of things.

The Pitt Rivers museum has been a rich source of ideas for Juliet herself; below is a book entitled ‘Etruscan Journeys’ which was inspired by study time in the museum.
