FELLOWS’ GALLERIES » ANN HECHLE
Born in Calcutta 1939. Returned to England 1945.
Aged 13, took up calligraphy at school where it was offered as one of the craft options; then in 1957-58 did a Foundation year at Reigate School of Art.
In 1958, went to the Central School in London, where significantly Irene Wellington was teaching calligraphy – which was a life-changing experience.
After leaving Art School, taught lettering part time at Sutton School of Art for 5 years; but took a gap year working on excavations and drawing archaeological finds in the Middle East.
Since then, the last fifty years or so have been spent in the practice of calligraphy: teaching, working on commissions and developing my own personal work.
