George Thomson is a Visiting Professor at the St Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia, Canada and an Honorary Research Associate of the University of Glasgow with a multi-disciplinary background in lettering, design, archaeology and zoological systematics. He trained under Stuart Barrie, another Fellow, at Edinburgh College of Art. As well as being a practicing calligrapher and lettering designer George spent many years as a lecturer at Glasgow School of Art and Head of Graphic Design at the University of Cumbria. After undertaking a PhD in zoological systematics, while still teaching in Glasgow, his focus moved to research in two main fields: computer-aided calligraphy and inscriptional palaeography. He has pioneered the use of advanced statistical methods, especially geometric morphometrics, in the study of grave marker inscriptions and has lectured and written many papers, articles and several books on calligraphy, lettering and inscriptional palaeography.
