My love for letters was kindled as an engineering apprentice in a drawing office and later encouraged by local classes in calligraphy and a great deal of self-tuition. Things got more serious when I joined the SSI in the mid-80s; in particular the help and encouragement I received from Fellows Sue Hufton and Richard Middleton who helped me with my application to the Advanced Training Scheme in 1994 and election to Fellowship in 1996.

My commissioned work has included addresses, illuminated certificates, inscriptions and Books of Remembrance for local and national institutions such as councils and churches, as well as promotional artwork for logos, other PR material and designs for CD covers. My private commissions range from inscriptional work on books and invitations to detailed family trees, framed poetry, and more unusual items such as manuscript books, illuminated initials, heraldry, monograms and designs for tattoos. In 2018 I was commissioned to produce illuminated border patterns for display on the ceiling of The Auckland Tower, Co. Durham.

I have been a teacher of calligraphy for many years, through Adult Education and my own privately organized classes. As a tutor of day and weekend workshops I have visited local calligraphy groups up and down the country. Since 2014 I have worked as a tutor on the SSI’s Calligraphy Correspondence Course.
