“It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the death of Joan Pilsbury. As a calligrapher she will be remembered for her exquisite work – in writing, drawing and painting. She had the courage to follow her own path – not being seduced by the changing directions of calligraphy, while at the same time being observant and open-minded.
As well as doing her own work, for many years Joan worked as a Scribe and Illuminator to HM Crown Office, producing numerous Life Peerage and other Letters Patent, for which she received the MBE.
As a person, she will be remembered for her warmth, generosity and gentle humour. And for her integrity, which so clearly flowed out and informed her work. She was, as her friend Irene Wellington said “pure gold”.
