GESTURAL CAPITALS using flat brush and pen
with YVES LETERME
From 21 – 23 June 2019 (arrive evening 20th June ready to start next morning)
Three days of expert tuition, including accommodation and all meals
The SSI is delighted to announce Yves Leterme as our tutor for the 2019 Masterclass. Yves will be skilfully combining ideas and techniques from two of his popular themed workshops to give an in-depth and more studied approach to Gestural Capitals working with two very different tools: flat brush and pen.
Anyone who seeks a better understanding of letterforms or aims for a higher degree of subtlety will soon realise how much the flat brush can help to achieve that goal. There’s no better tool to explore how pressure and small manipulations have a favourable effect on lines and shapes. In this Masterclass you will learn how to manipulate the brush and practise your skills on a simple alphabet that has the potential to swing.
Moving on to the pen, you’ll learn some exercises intended to put more energy and tension into your lines. Your moves will become gestural and you’ll learn how to maintain control over the writing process, even when more speed is involved. Attention will be given to aspects such as pen angle, pressure, variation, rhythm, tools, textures, and finishing details.
This Masterclass is aimed at those who are who are confident with their lettering but would like to experiment and expand their skills with flat brush and pen.
Yves lives near Bruges in Belgium but travels widely to teach and lecture for numerous calligraphy organisations and international conferences. He has been a teacher for the greater part of his life and continues to welcome any opportunity to work with classes of eager students.
The course will be held at High Leigh Conference Centre in Hertfordshire where, with 40 acres of lawns, parkland and woodland, the tranquil surroundings of this wonderful summer venue aids both concentration and relaxation. During the evenings interesting talks and entertaining activities will be on offer.
