We are delighted that Katherina Pieper will be giving our 2017 Masterclass on the 18th and 19th of March 2017. The subject she has chosen is
THE VERSATILE REDIS PEN – formal and expressive calligraphy with a single writing tool
She will introduce us to the delights of the Redis nib, which has a disc at its end instead of a straight edge. This type of nib isn’t particularly well known in calligraphic circles and it deserves wider use. It produces a line of uniform thickness and can be freely pushed in any direction. You may think that a monoline tool doesn’t offer many calligraphic possibilities: in fact it is a versatile and exciting tool as we will find out in this Masterclass.
We will begin our exploration by writing monoline sans serif capitals and using these as a basis, experiment with geometric exercises, working towards an almost typographic form. Then we will move on to Italic, formally at first, increasing speed and fluency until we arrive at a free, expressive, modern cursive script. Finally we will experiment with different types of nib (eg Speedball ‘A’ series) and pen manipulation. Katharina will demonstrate more unconventional ways of using these nibs and you will be astonished at what exciting contemporary results you can achieve with a ‘monoline’ nib.
Materials: Redis nibs ( these are similar to Speedball ‘B’ series or Brause Ornament nibs) in different sizes; 2 and 2 1/2mm are recommended (the measurement is across the width of the disc). Katharina will have these for sale. Speedball ‘A’ series nibs in size A1 and A2 or A2 and A3. Ink, black and some colours, gouache paints, palettes, brushes for mixing, water pot, kitchen roll. Cartridge, at least A3 or watercolour papers, 1 to 2 sheets of black paper. We will be making a small book with the results of our experiments so bring a sheet of thicker paper (handmade, Khadi or similar) for the cover of the book, thread or cord to sew and close the book. Ruler, set square, pencil, eraser.
Katherina is the foremost calligrapher of her generation in Germany.
Born in 1962 in Saarlouis, she is a passionate calligrapher and writer. In her artistic work, she uses spiritual texts of both Western and Eastern authors. She works in many formats: Art books, large canvases, screens, plexiglass and long scrolls, combining formal calligraphy with expressive contemporary mark-making.
In 2010, she was the first artist using Roman alphabets to present a solo exhibition at the Calligraphy Biennial in the United Arab Emirates, to which she was invited again in 2016. She has also exhibited in St. Petersburg, Mumbai and South Korea. She has published various books on the subject of “writing letters” and founded her own press in 1996. She is author of many articles and editorial contributions to books on calligraphy.
The list of her achievements is impressively long and she is an inspiring teacher. We are sure that this Masterclass with her will encourage you to take your work forward into new and exciting places.
