We are pleased to announce that we will be holding two linked days in spring/early summer next year with the aim of helping participants to find inspiration for calligraphic pieces and to work with them on the development of initial ideas. These linked days will be particularly suitable for those who are interested in applying for the Advanced Training Scheme but will also be of interest to anyone who finds the starting point for a piece of work difficult. Cherrell Avery will be the leader for both sessions. Participation in both days is essential.
There will be a maximum of ten places. To take part you will have to have good writing skills and have some experience in basic design.
Study Group Session 1 Ideas and Resources
Sunday 24th April 2016 at the V&A Museum. 10am until 3pm .
Cherrell was resident calligrapher at the V&A in 2012, so she knows its collections well. With her guidance you will be encouraged to think about form, colour, texture and all aspects of lettering design using objects as inspiration. You will need to bring with you a camera, a notebook and a sketchbook.
There are 7 weeks between sessions. In this time you should be thinking about the ideas and images from the first session, so that you come to the second session having got to the stage of putting pen to paper.
Study Group Session 2. Development 10am until 4pm
Saturday 11th June at the London Metropolitan Archives, 40 Northampton Road, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 0HB
This will be a practical workshop, with discussion, critiques and help with approach and design. You will need to bring all your roughs from your thinking time and your usual calligraphic equipment.
The Study Days are open to both SSI members and non-members. The cost for the two days will be £90 for SSI members, £120 for non-SSI members. Applications will be taken from the beginning of August. Any questions in the meantime can be put to Jilly Hazeldine, gillianhazeldine12@gmail.com
