The SSI Study Days provide a unique opportunity to find inspiration for your projects and to develop your ideas through to a finished piece

The course comprises two days:

Day 1 October 18th 2025 at the Great North Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne          greatnorthmuseum.org.uk
A day to explore galleries showing a wide range of artefacts from the Iron and Bronze ages through the Greek, Egyptian and Etruscan civilisations as well as a large gallery devoted to Romand inscriptions, sculpture and objects found along Hadrian's Wall. Time to look, make notes, sketch, photograph and to talk and explore ideas.
Day 2 February 21st 2026 at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead                               shipleyartgallery.org.uk
A practical workshop to progress ideas and work with guidance and discussion. The Shipley is the North East's leading gallery of art and design and holds the notable Henry Rothschild collection of 20th century craft and design. Many links can be made between the early artefacts seen in the GNM on Day 1 and more contemporary makers.

Please note that you need to attend both days.

After the two days, there will be opportunities for Zoom meetings with the tutor. This course is not suitable for beginners but is ideal for anyone with good writing skills and particularly for those who struggle to find source material or inspiration for work.
